iPhone Screen Shot Shows Multitasking – Apple Truly Worried About Pre/

iPhone copies palm pre background mode

This screenshot surfaced earlier today, and from what we can tell, it appears to be the new iPhone firmware (attempting to) run a background application. So what does this mean? Well, a few things, in fact. Firstly, it shows that Apple is actually taking the Pre seriously. They are beginning to realize that Palm has a great product in the works – one that truly has a chance of shaking up the industry. We never saw anything like this with the G1 Android phone or any other proclaimed “iPhone killer”. This gives the implication that the Palm Pre truly does have the best shot (and a seemingly good one, at that) to dethrone the iPhone.

Secondly, it supports the presumption that the Pre will in fact have some of the fastest hardware, as it took the iPhone three reivisions to finally have the hardware specs that would allow it to run whatever (limited, in all likelihood) background mode it does have. Palm has really been taking their time on this phone, and now it is showing not only from the rumor mills and Palm fanboys, but more importantly their main competitor and target.

So what now? Well, it looks like all iPhone apps that wish to have a background mode ability must be revised so as to not hog resources and what not. This is good news, as we won’t suddenly see a flood of iPhone apps that are now being used in psuedo-background mode. I think that the Pre will still have the upper hand for a long while after launch. Tell us what you think below.
